TV sizes: the chart, in inches and centimeters

How wide and tall every TV size is, from a 32 in bedroom set to a 116 in giant, what the size number measures, the real outside size of popular models, and how far from each one to sit.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A TV’s size is the diagonal of its picture, corner to corner, in inches; the frame isn’t counted. On a standard 16:9 screen the picture is about 0.87 × the size wide and 0.49 × the size tall, so a 65 in TV’s screen is 56.7 × 31.9 in, and the whole TV, frame included, about 57 × 33 in. The common sizes are 43, 50, 55, 65, 75 and 85 in, with 98 to 116 in at the top; OLED TVs also come in 42, 48, 77, 83 and 97 in.

Screen sizes are 16:9 geometry from the nominal size: width = size × 0.8716, height = size × 0.4903. The TV itself is wider and taller by its frame. “Sit about” runs from 1.2 × the size, where the screen fills about 40° of your view, to 1.6 ×, about 30°. Our arithmetic.

Pick a size to see its page as it’s published, with the real dimensions of models in that size. To find the size for your seat, use the TV size calculator.

How TV sizes are measured

The number is the diagonal of the picture area, from one corner of the screen to the opposite one, in inches. TCL’s support pages and Samsung’s buying guide both describe it that way, and the frame around the picture isn’t included. To check a TV yourself, measure the picture from the bottom left corner to the top right corner, inside the frame.

Why a 65 in TV may measure 64.5 in. Makers sell sizes as a “class”, and the real picture can be a little smaller. Samsung lists its 65-inch class QN90F at 64.5 in diagonal, and Vizio lists its 43-inch class Quantum at 42.5 in viewable. Check the spec sheet’s diagonal if a half inch matters, for a recessed niche or a frame.

No federal rule sets how sizes are advertised any more: the FTC repealed its 1966 TV size rule in 2019, noting that the whole industry already measures the diagonal.

From each maker’s spec page, October 20, 2026. Samsung and LG figures are from their Canadian spec pages (the US models are the same with a different code), converted from millimeters and kilograms; Vizio’s US pages list inches. Samsung doesn’t list the 50 in U8000F’s weight.

Two things to take from the table. First, on today’s thin frames a TV is only about ½ to 1 in wider and taller than its screen, so the chart’s screen sizes are close to the TV’s. Second, the stand is what decides the furniture under it: these stands need 8 to 16 in of depth, and some TVs stand on two feet near the ends rather than one in the middle, so check the distance between the feet against your console.

Standard TV sizes you can buy

  • LCD, LED and Mini LED TVs: 43, 50, 55, 65, 75 and 85 in in most lines (LG’s is 86), plus 70 in on some lower-priced lines, such as Samsung’s Crystal UHD and Vizio’s Quantum.
  • OLED TVs: 42, 48, 55, 65, 77 and 83 in (Samsung S90H, LG C6), and 97 in at the top of LG’s G6 line. The 42, 48, 77, 83 and 97 in sizes appeared only on OLEDs in the lines we checked.
  • Small TVs: 32 and 40 in, in TCL’s budget line among those we checked.
  • Very big TVs: 98 and 100 in from Samsung, LG, TCL and Hisense, and 115 or 116 in at the top.
  • Samsung The Frame: the 2026 model comes in 55, 65, 75, 85 and 98 in, and the Frame Pro in 55 to 85 in; the 2025 Frame is still listed in 43 and 50 in.

A 116 in screen is 101 × 57 in, over 8 ft wide: it needs a wall at least that long and, at 1.2 × its size, a seat about 11.6 ft away. The 100-inch TV dimensions page covers the size most big-screen buyers stop at.

What size TV fits your room

Two rules of thumb from the makers and standards, both easy to work out with a tape measure:

  • About 40° of your view, a cinema feel: screen size = your distance in inches ÷ 1.2 (LG). THX’s version is your distance × 0.835, which comes to the same angle.
  • About 30°, for everyday viewing: sit about 1.6 × the screen size away. That’s the distance the ITU gives for HD pictures, three times the screen’s height.

So at 9 ft (108 in) a 65 to 90 in TV suits, and a 75 in sits in the middle. The TV size calculator does it for your seat, and the TV mounting height guide says how high to hang it.
