Every seat in the list is between 16½ and 18⅞ inches high, inside Wayfair's 15 to 20. Depth varies more: from 31⅛ inches for the SALTMYRAN to 40½ for the STOCKHOLM 2025, whose seat is 27⅛ inches deep. That's 9⅜ inches more floor between the wall and the coffee table, so check the depth as well as the length.
Couch height and seat height
Wayfair puts sofa height at 26 to 36 inches, measured from the floor to the top of the back. A low back keeps a window behind the sofa clear; a high one gives more support for your head.
For comfort, the seat matters more than the overall size. Most seats are 17 to 18 inches high, and Wayfair calls 21 to 22 inches of seat depth standard for people of average height. Tall people do better with a higher, deeper seat: Wayfair's sectional guide calls 28 to 35 inches of seat depth deep.
How much room a couch needs
- In front: 30 inches of walking room if people walk past the sofa (Wayfair). An 84 × 35 in sofa then takes 65 inches from the wall.
