The average dining room in the US is about 14 × 16 feet, or 224 square feet, according to Home Stratosphere and Designing Idea. Designing Idea calls 11 × 14 (154 sq ft) the standard size, enough for six. We ran both through our Dining Table Size calculator. With 44 in to walk behind the chairs, a 14 × 16 takes a 36 × 96 in table for ten, and an 11 × 14 an 80 in table for eight.
What is the average dining room size?
Home Stratosphere puts the average dining room in the US at 14 × 16 feet, and Designing Idea calls the same 14 × 16 (224 sq ft) the common size. Designing Idea calls 11 × 14 (154 sq ft) the standard dining room size, enough for six people to sit and move around. Houzz lands in the same place from another direction: a dining room with a fireplace and similar furniture needs at least 14 × 16 feet, and 15 × 20 will likely work better.
For smaller and larger rooms, the guides go by the number of people at the table. Both put about 11 × 11 at four and 11 × 14 at six. For eight or more, Home Stratosphere says at least 11 × 16, while Designing Idea gives 12 × 16 or 14 × 18 for eight, at least 15 × 16 for ten and at least 16 × 17 for twelve.
The largest table each dining room size fits
Square feet don't set the seats; the clearance behind the chairs does. We ran every size the guides give through our Dining Table Size calculator at the NKBA's two clearances: 36 in from the table edge to the wall, so people can edge past seated diners, and 44 in, so they can walk behind the chairs.
| Room | What the guides say | 36 in behind the chairs | 44 in behind the chairs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11 × 11 121 sq ft | Seats 4 (Home Stratosphere, Designing Idea) | 60 in · seats 6 | 42 in round · seats 4 |
| 11 × 14 154 sq ft | Seats 6 (both); with a small buffet (Home Stratosphere) | 96 in · seats 10 | 80 in · seats 8 |
| 11 × 16 176 sq ft | Seats 8 or more (Home Stratosphere) | 120 in · seats 12 | 104 in · seats 10 |
| 12 × 16 192 sq ft | Table for 8 (Designing Idea) | 120 in · seats 12 | 104 in · seats 10 |
| 14 × 16 224 sq ft | Average (Home Stratosphere), common (Designing Idea); the least with a fireplace (Houzz) | 120 in · seats 12 | 104 in · seats 10 |
| 15 × 16 240 sq ft | Table for 10 (Designing Idea) | 120 in · seats 12 | 104 in · seats 10 |
| 14 × 18 252 sq ft | Table for 8 (Designing Idea); a formal table and a hutch (Home Stratosphere) | 144 in · seats 12 | 128 in · seats 12 |
| 16 × 17 272 sq ft | Table for 12, with buffets (Designing Idea) | 132 in · seats 12 | 116 in · seats 10 |

Longest table at least 36 in wide that keeps the clearance on every side, and the seats the Dining Table Size calculator gives for that length (24 in of table edge per person; its count tops out at 12). In the 11 × 11 at 44 in, no rectangle from 48 in up fits, so the cell shows the largest round in its list. Room sizes in feet, from Home Stratosphere, Designing Idea and Houzz.
At 36 in, the guides' counts are low. The 11 × 11 they give for four takes a 36 × 60 in table for six. The 11 × 14 they give for six takes a 96 in table, which the calculator rates for ten. Designing Idea's 12 × 16 and 14 × 18 for eight and its 15 × 16 for ten all take a table for twelve. Only its 16 × 17 for twelve matches.
At 44 in, the counts come closer. The 11 × 11 takes a 42 in round for four, the same four both guides give. The 11 × 14 takes an 80 in table for eight. Designing Idea's 15 × 16 for ten takes a 104 in table for ten, a match. Its 16 × 17 for twelve falls 4 in short: a 120 in table with 44 in at each end needs 120 + 44 + 44 = 208 in, or 17 ft 4 in.
Width is never the limit at these sizes. A 36 in-wide table needs 36 + 36 + 36 = 108 in (9 ft) of width at 36 in, and 36 + 44 + 44 = 124 in (10 ft 4 in) at 44 in. Every guide size is at least 11 ft wide, so the length sets the seats. The guides also leave room for other furniture: Home Stratosphere's 11 × 14 includes a small buffet and its 14 × 18 a hutch, and Designing Idea's 16 × 17 has buffets and plants.
Dining room size for 6, 8, 10 or 12 people
Start from the table instead: these are the smallest dining room dimensions for each table. Each one is the table plus the clearance on both sides, both ways: for a 36 × 96 in table at 44 in, 36 + 44 + 44 = 124 in by 96 + 44 + 44 = 184 in, or 10 ft 4 in × 15 ft 4 in. The calculator passes each table at exactly that size and fails it 1 in smaller either way.
| Seats | Table | 36 in to edge past | 44 in to walk past | Designing Idea's room |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 36 × 72 in | 9 ft × 12 ft | 10 ft 4 in × 13 ft 4 in | 11 × 14 |
| 8 | 36 × 84 in | 9 ft × 13 ft | 10 ft 4 in × 14 ft 4 in | 12 × 16 or 14 × 18 |
| 10 | 36 × 96 in | 9 ft × 14 ft | 10 ft 4 in × 15 ft 4 in | 15 × 16 |
| 12 | 36 × 120 in | 9 ft × 16 ft | 10 ft 4 in × 17 ft 4 in | 16 × 17 |
| 6–8 | 60 in round | 11 ft × 11 ft | 12 ft 4 in × 12 ft 4 in | – |
Smallest dining area, width × length, for each table in the Dining Table Size calculator. Seats are the calculator's: West Elm's sizes for six to ten, and twelve from 120 in long, five a side at 24 in each plus one at each end. Designing Idea's rooms in feet, for the number seated.
Each of Designing Idea's rooms is wider than the 10 ft 4 in a 36 in-wide table needs at 44 in. Its 15 × 16 for ten has 4 ft 8 in to spare, room for a sideboard or a walkway along one side. The rows for six and eight match the table in our guide to how much space around a dining table.
Leave room for a sideboard
Houzz gives a worked example: a 36 × 72 in table works in a room as small as 11 × 12 feet, allowing 2 feet for the sideboard. We checked it. With the sideboard along a 12 ft wall, 9 × 12 feet is left, and the calculator fits a 36 × 72 in table with exactly 36 in on every side (Layout C below). Put the sideboard on an 11 ft wall instead and 10 × 11 is left: the 72 in table no longer fits, but a 36 × 60 in table for six does.
| Room, sideboard along | Floor left | 36 in behind the chairs | 44 in behind the chairs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11 × 12 (Houzz), on a 12 ft wall | 9 × 12 | 72 in · seats 6 | None |
| 11 × 12, on an 11 ft wall | 10 × 11 | 60 in · seats 6 | None |
| 11 × 14 (standard), on a 14 ft wall | 9 × 14 | 96 in · seats 10 | None |
| 11 × 14, on an 11 ft wall | 11 × 12 | 72 in · seats 6 | 56 in · seats 4 |
| 14 × 16 (average), on a 16 ft wall | 12 × 16 | 120 in · seats 12 | 104 in · seats 10 |
| 14 × 16, on a 14 ft wall | 14 × 14 | 96 in · seats 10 | 80 in · seats 8 |
Houzz's 2-ft allowance for the sideboard taken off one wall, then the longest table at least 36 in wide and its seats, from the Dining Table Size calculator. None: a 36 in table plus 44 in on each side needs 124 in (10 ft 4 in) of width.
In the 11 × 14, a sideboard on a long wall still leaves room for a 96 in table at 36 in, but for nothing 36 in wide at 44 in. In the average 14 × 16 it costs no seats: with the sideboard on a 16 ft wall, a 104 in table for ten still fits with 44 in to walk past, as it does without one. Measure the clearance from the front of the sideboard, not the wall: the NKBA measures from the table edge to any wall or other obstruction behind the seats. Houzz allows 2 feet in its example; the cabinets themselves can be as shallow as 10 in, it says, with 12 to 16 in working better.
3 dining rooms, drawn by the Dining Table Size calculator
The average 14 × 16, the small 11 × 11, and Houzz's 11 × 12 with a sideboard. Each plan is the calculator's own drawing; the hatched band is the clearance that has to stay clear of walls and furniture.
Layout A: The average: a 14 × 16 with a table for 10
Fits Walk past: 48 in at the ends, 66 in at the sides
A 36 × 96 in table runs down the 16 ft length, with 44 in kept to walk behind the chairs. That leaves 48 in at each end and 66 in along each side: 48 + 96 + 48 = 192 in one way and 66 + 36 + 66 = 168 in the other. The calculator rates a 96 in table for ten, and the largest it allows here is 80 × 104 in.
Best for: a family dining room where people walk behind the chairs to reach the kitchen.
The trade-off: at 36 in, the same room takes a 120 in table for twelve, so the walkway costs two seats.
Layout B: Small: an 11 × 11 with a round table for 4
Fits Walk past: 45 in all round
A 42 in round sits in the middle and leaves 45 in on every side: 45 + 42 + 45 = 132 in each way. It's the largest round in the calculator's list that keeps 44 in; the calculator allows up to a 44 in round, which it rates for four to six. No rectangular table from 48 in up fits at 44 in: a 36 × 48 in needs 36 + 44 + 44 = 124 in by 48 + 44 + 44 = 136 in, 4 in more than the room.
Best for: four people, the number both guides give for an 11 × 11.
The trade-off: at 36 in to edge past, the same room takes a 60 in round for six to eight, or a 36 × 60 in table for six: 60 + 36 + 36 = 132 in.
Layout C: With a sideboard: Houzz's 11 × 12 with a table for 6
Fits Edge past: exactly 36 in all round
Take Houzz's 2 feet for the sideboard off the 11 ft width and 9 × 12 is left. A 36 × 72 in table gets exactly 36 in on all four sides: 36 + 72 + 36 = 144 in and 36 + 36 + 36 = 108 in. The calculator rates it for six, and the plan draws six chairs, three down each side.
Best for: Houzz's own example: six at the table, with a sideboard behind one row of chairs.
The trade-off: 36 in lets people edge past seated diners, not walk past: 44 in needs 124 in of width, and 108 in is left. An 84 in table would leave 30 in at the ends, under the 32 in minimum.
The numbers we checked
These are the numbers behind every table and plan on this page.
The room sizes come from Home Stratosphere, Designing Idea and Houzz. The clearances come from the NKBA, the seat counts from West Elm, Bassett and Wayfair, and the 24 in per person from IKEA and Pottery Barn, as on the Dining Table Size calculator page.
- The dining area, wall to wall both ways, or to the edge of a walkway or kitchen counter.
- Anything that sticks out: a sideboard, a radiator, a door swing. Measure the table's clearance from its front.
- Whether people walk behind the chairs to reach the kitchen or a door. That takes 44 in, not 36 in.
- Your table with any leaves in, and how wide it is: a 36 in table needs 9 ft of width at 36 in.

Questions
How big should a dining room be?
Big enough for the table plus 36 in on every side, so people can edge past seated diners, or 44 in where they walk behind the chairs (NKBA). For a 36 × 72 in table for six, that's 9 × 12 feet, or 10 ft 4 in × 13 ft 4 in to walk past. The guides give more: 11 × 14 for six, and Home Stratosphere adds a small buffet.
What is the average size of a dining room?
About 14 × 16 feet, or 224 square feet (Home Stratosphere, Designing Idea). Designing Idea calls 11 × 14 (154 sq ft) the standard size, and Home Stratosphere puts a small dining room at about 11 × 11 or smaller.
What size dining room table fits my room?
Take 72 in off the room's length and width for 36 in on every side, or 88 in for 44 in, and what's left is the largest table. A 14 × 16 takes up to 96 × 120 in at 36 in, or 80 × 104 in at 44 in. The Dining Table Size calculator does the sums and lists the standard sizes that fit.
How much space do you need for a dining table?
36 in from the table edge to the wall or the nearest furniture, so people can edge past seated diners; 44 in to walk behind the chairs; 32 in only where nobody passes (NKBA). Our guide to how much space around a dining table has the room each table needs.
What size dining room for an 8 or 10 person table?
A 36 × 96 in table seats ten. It needs 9 × 14 feet with 36 in all round, or 10 ft 4 in × 15 ft 4 in to walk behind the chairs. For eight, a 36 × 84 in table needs 9 × 13 feet, or 10 ft 4 in × 14 ft 4 in.
What size rug for a 14 × 16 dining room?
With a 36 × 96 in table, a 9×12. Our Rug Size calculator finds it reaches 24 in past the ends of the table and 36 in past the sides, and leaves at least 24 in of floor at the walls. See what size rug for a dining table for other tables.
