Room minus 72 in Take 72 in off each room dimension, which leaves 36 in behind the chairs on every side, and what’s left is your largest table. A 10×12 dining area fits up to a 72 in-long table, which seats 6. If no one ever passes behind the chairs, 32 in a side is the minimum.
Plan for the chairs, not just the table. A diner pushed back from the table takes up the space between the table edge and the wall, and anyone who needs to get past needs more. The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) publishes those distances, and the calculator above applies them to your room.
How much room behind the chairs
| Behind the chairs | Clearance | What it allows |
|---|---|---|
| Seated, no one passing | 32 in | Chairs pull out; nobody walks behind |
| Edge past | 36 in | Someone can squeeze past a seated diner |
| Walk past | 44 in | Comfortable walking behind the chairs |
| Wheelchair passage | 60 in | A wheelchair can pass behind a seated diner |
NKBA Kitchen Planning Guideline 8, measured from the table edge to the wall or the nearest furniture.

For a dining corner in a living room, measure to the edge of the walkway or the back of the sofa instead of a wall. Our guide to a dining table in a small living room walks through the layouts.
The numbers we used
These are the numbers behind the calculator. Where they come from is listed under Sources at the end.
- The dining area, wall to wall or to the edge of the walkway.
- Anything that sticks out: radiators, a sideboard, a door swing.
- Whether people walk behind the chairs to reach the kitchen or a door.
- Your chairs: armchairs need more than 24 in of table edge each.

Questions
How much space do you need around a dining table?
At least 36 in from the table edge to the wall so people can edge past seated diners, and 44 in to walk behind them. 32 in works only if no one ever passes.
What size table fits a 10×10 dining room?
With 36 in on every side, up to a 48 × 48 in table or a 48 in round. Either seats 4; the round can squeeze in 6.
How many people fit at a 6-foot table?
Six: West Elm sizes tables 60 to 72 in long for six. Along a 72 in side, that’s three diners at 24 in each.
Is a round table better in a small room?
In a square room, a round table seats about the same number as a square one of the same size, and its curved edge leaves a little more space at the corners for passing.
