The layout that works in most living rooms puts the sofa on a long wall, facing the TV or the fireplace, with the coffee table 16 in in front of it and a chair at each end of the table. Keep 30 in walkways from the door to the seats, and set the sofa where the TV fills about 30° of your view: about 10 ft from a 75 in screen. Below are 8 plans that pass those checks, and every room we solved, by size and seating.

Seating sizes are the planner’s: a 60 in loveseat, a 68 in apartment sofa, an 84 in sofa and a 96 in sectional with a chaise, all 34 to 37 in deep, and 32 × 32 in armchairs. The TV in each plan is the size that suits its distance from the sofa, or close to it.
8 living room layout ideas, measured
1. Put the sofa on the long wall, facing the TV
It’s the layout most rooms are built for. Centered on a 15 ft wall, an 84 in sofa faces the TV across the room, and your eyes end up 9 ft 10 in from the screen. At that distance a 75 in TV fills about 31° of your view, about the 30° that suits everyday viewing. A chair at each end of the coffee table turns the group into a U.
- Sofa to the TV: 9 ft 10 in
- TV that suits it: 73 to 99 in
- Setting: Standard (30 in walkways)
The walk-through: 46 in stays clear between the coffee table and the TV stand, so nobody has to squeeze past the sofa.
2. In a small room, shrink the sofa, not the walkway
A 60 in loveseat and a 36 × 20 in coffee table fit a 10×10 room with the standard 30 in walkways, and leave 48 in of floor beside the loveseat on the door side. The TV sits 7 ft 10 in away, where a 55 in screen fills about 29° of your view.
- Sofa to the TV: 7 ft 10 in
- TV that suits it: 58 to 79 in
- Setting: Standard (30 in walkways)
Adding a chair: it fits only at the planner’s Minimum setting, with 24 in walkways, the narrowest Houzz suggests for minor paths.
3. Let a sectional’s chaise turn the corner of the group
A sectional seats more people on less floor than a sofa and two chairs, because the chaise does the work of a chair. Here a 96 in sectional runs along the 16 ft wall under the window, the chaise turns toward the TV wall, and one chair closes the open end of the coffee table. The screen is 10 ft 10 in away, so an 85 in TV fills about 32° of your view.
- Sofa to the TV: 10 ft 10 in
- TV that suits it: 80 to 109 in
- Setting: Standard (30 in walkways)
Measure first: the sectional dimensions guide has the sizes of each shape, and the space each one takes.
4. In a big room, float the sofa closer to the TV
Pushed against the wall of a 16×20 room, the sofa would sit 13 ft 10 in from the TV, and even an 85 in screen would look small. Pull it 36 in out and the distance drops to 11 ft 2 in, where an 85 in TV fills about 31° of your view. The strip behind the sofa becomes a 36 in walkway, so people pass behind the group instead of through it.
- Sofa to the TV: 11 ft 2 in
- TV that suits it: 82 to 112 in
- Setting: Roomy (36 in walkways)
Behind the sofa: a console table there should be about as tall as the sofa’s back; the sofa table height guide has the numbers.
5. No TV: face the chairs toward the sofa
Without a screen to face, set the group up for talking. The sofa goes on the 12 ft wall and two chairs face it across the coffee table, about 7½ ft seat to seat, inside the 8 ft Houzz gives as the most for an easy conversation. The rest of the room stays open for a reading corner or a desk.
- Setting: Standard (30 in walkways)
Two sofas instead: the two facing sofas guide has the room that takes.
6. With two doorways, keep the path outside the seating
A living room you walk through needs its path planned first. Here the way from the door to the second doorway runs between the coffee table and the TV, 46 in wide, then across the open end of the room, and never between the sofa and its table. The sofa starts just past the second doorway, on the same wall, and a single chair closes the far end of the table.
- Sofa to the TV: 9 ft 10 in
- TV that suits it: 73 to 99 in
- Setting: Standard (30 in walkways)
Patio doors: a sliding door works the same way; see living room layouts with patio doors.
7. In a square room, build a symmetrical group
A square room has no long wall to anchor the sofa, so balance does the job. The sofa is centered on one wall with 36 in free at each end, a chair stands on each side of the coffee table, and the TV is centered on the facing wall, 10 ft 10 in from your eyes.
- Sofa to the TV: 10 ft 10 in
- TV that suits it: 80 to 109 in
- Setting: Standard (30 in walkways)
Compare: the 13×13 living room layouts page has more ways to set this room up.
8. An apartment sofa fits two chairs where a full sofa can’t
A 68 in apartment sofa is 16 in shorter than a standard sofa, and in an 11×12 room that’s what makes space for a chair at each end of the coffee table. The TV is 8 ft 10 in away, where a 65 in screen fills about 30° of your view.
- Sofa to the TV: 8 ft 10 in
- TV that suits it: 65 to 89 in
- Setting: Standard (30 in walkways)
Sofa sizes: the couch dimensions guide lists loveseat, apartment sofa and full sofa sizes.
Layout mistakes that make a living room feel smaller
- A coffee table out of reach. More than about 18 in from the sofa and you lean to set a cup down; under 14 in and knees bump it. The coffee table distance guide has the details.
- A path through the conversation. If the way from the door to another room runs between the sofa and its table, every trip interrupts it. Plan the path first, as in idea 6.
- Every piece against the walls. In a large room that leaves an empty middle and seats too far apart to talk. Float the group, as in idea 4.
- A TV too far for its size. At 12 ft, a 55 in TV fills only about 19° of your view. Size the screen to the seat with the TV size calculator, and hang it with the TV mounting height guide.
- A rug that floats in the middle. The front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on it. The living room rug size guide has the sizes.
How to plan your living room layout
- Measure the room, wall to wall, and where each door, doorway and window starts.
- Pick the focal point: the TV, a fireplace or a window, and put the sofa facing it.
- Add the coffee table 14 to 18 in in front of the sofa, then chairs at its ends or across from it.
- Check the paths and the screen: 30 in walkways from each door, and the TV at about 1.6 times its size from your eyes.
The living room layout planner does those four steps for your room and draws every layout that passes.
Questions
What is the best layout for a living room?
For most rooms: the sofa on a long wall facing the TV or fireplace, the coffee table 14 to 18 in in front of it, a chair at each end of the table, and 30 in walkways from the doors. In a room over about 16 ft long, float the group off the wall so the seats sit closer together and closer to the screen.
Where should the sofa go in a living room?
Facing the focal point, usually on the longest wall without a door. Keep it out of the path between doorways, and in a large room pull it off the wall, leaving 30 to 36 in behind it to walk through.
How far should the sofa be from the TV?
About 1.6 times the screen size for everyday viewing (about 30° of your view), or 1.2 times for a cinema feel (THX’s 40°). That’s about 10 ft or 7 ft 6 in from a 75 in TV. The TV size calculator works it out for your room.
