A sofa table should be as tall as the back of your sofa or lower, never taller (Living Spaces, Hunker). Console tables, sofa tables included, run 28 to 32 in tall, 30 in on average (Living Spaces). Sofa backs run 26 to 36 in (Wayfair), so measure yours first: a 30 in table suits any back 30 in or taller. For length, make it at least 12 in shorter than the sofa (Hunker), 6 in short of each end: 72 in behind an 84 in sofa.
How tall should a sofa table be?
Start with the sofa. Wayfair measures a sofa's height from the floor to the very top of the back, and puts it at 26 to 36 in, as on Nest In Small’s Furniture Sizes page. For loveseats, Wayfair gives a back height of 30 to 40 in.
The table goes up to that line and no higher. Living Spaces says a sofa table should be no taller than the sofa back; Hunker says close to level, and slightly shorter is better than slightly taller. A sofa table is a console table placed behind a sofa (Living Spaces), and consoles run 28 to 32 in tall, 30 in on average (Living Spaces, Hunker). Here is which of those heights fits each sofa back:
| Sofa back | Tallest table | 28 to 32 in tables that fit | The 30 in average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26 in | 26 in | None: all are taller | 4 in above the back |
| 28 in | 28 in | 28 in | 2 in above the back |
| 30 in | 30 in | 28 to 30 in | Level with the back |
| 32 in | 32 in | 28 to 32 in | 2 in below the back |
| 34 in | 34 in | 28 to 32 in | 4 in below the back |
| 36 in | 36 in | 28 to 32 in | 6 in below the back |
Tallest table: the top of the sofa back (Living Spaces). Console heights: 28 to 32 in, average 30 in (Living Spaces). Sofa backs 26 to 36 in, measured to the very top of the back (Wayfair, on our Furniture Sizes chart).
The 30 in average fits any sofa whose back is 30 in or taller. Low sofas are the hard case: under 28 in, every table in the 28 to 32 in range stands above the back, so you need one shorter than that range. On a tall back of 34 to 36 in every height in the range fits, and the closest to level is 32 in, 2 to 4 in below it. Behind a loveseat, the lowest back Wayfair gives (30 in) takes a 28 to 30 in table.
How long should a sofa table be?
Shorter than the sofa. Hunker says at least 12 in shorter than the sofa, which leaves 6 in at each end when the table is centered: the sofa's length minus 12 in. Here it is for the sofa lengths on our Furniture Sizes chart:
| Sofa | Length | Sofa table, 6 in in from each end |
|---|---|---|
| Loveseat, shortest | 48 in | 36 in |
| Loveseat, most | 52 to 66 in | 40 to 54 in |
| Apartment sofa | Under 70 in | Under 58 in |
| Three-seat sofa, shortest | 71 in | 59 in |
| Three-seat sofa, most common | 84 in | 72 in |
| Three-seat sofa, longest | 86 in | 74 in |
Sofa lengths: Furniture Sizes (Wayfair). Sofa table: the sofa's length − 12 in (Hunker: at least 12 in shorter).
So the most common 84 in sofa takes a sofa table up to 72 in, and across three-seat sofas the longest table runs from 59 to 74 in. A shorter table still follows Hunker's rule; a longer one leaves less than 6 in at each end.
How much floor does a sofa table take?
Its depth, front to back, on top of the sofa's. Wayfair sorts console tables by depth: narrow is under 12 in, standard 12 to 20 in and deep over 20 in. Where that depth comes from depends on where the sofa sits. Against a wall, the table goes between the sofa and the wall. Floated in the room, it goes behind the sofa with a walkway behind it: Houzz allows 30 to 48 in for a main walkway, and our living room layout planner keeps 30 in behind a floated sofa at standard clearances.
The planner doesn't model sofa tables, so we added the table to the sofa: an 84 × 37 in sofa with a 12 in table behind it goes in as one 84 × 49 in piece. Then we ran every table depth from 0 to 60 in through every layout the planner tries, with its 48 × 24 in coffee table and a 55 in TV on a 60 × 16 in console, and kept the deepest table that still passes every check.
| Room | Sofa against a wall | Sofa floated, 30 in behind the table | With an armchair: against · floated |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 × 11 | 10 in | Doesn’t float | No layout |
| 10 × 12 | 22 in | Doesn’t float | 11 in · none |
| 12 × 12 | 22 in | Doesn’t float | 15 in · none |
| 12 × 13 | 34 in | 8 in | 27 in · 1 in |
| 13 × 13 | 34 in | 8 in | 27 in · 8 in |
| 12 × 14 | 46 in | 20 in | 39 in · 13 in |
| 12 × 15 | 58 in | 32 in | 51 in · 25 in |
Deepest sofa table, in 1 in steps, that passes at standard clearances (30 in walkways, 16 in legroom, 24 in in front of the TV), with the planner's 84 × 37 in sofa. Against a wall, the planner's 4 in gap stays behind the table. A 32 in door near a corner of the left wall, a 60 in window centered on the right wall; last column with a 32 × 32 in armchair. "Doesn't float": no floated layout passes, even with no table. "No layout": nothing passes with the chair, even with no table. The planner lists only its three best-scoring layouts, so a floated layout that passes isn't always among them; these limits come from checking every layout it tries.
Without an armchair it's plain arithmetic down the room. Against a wall the line is 4 in behind the table, the table, the 37 in sofa, 16 in of legroom, the 24 in coffee table, at least 24 in to pass the TV, the 16 in console and 1 in behind it. That is 4 + 37 + 16 + 24 + 24 + 16 + 1 = 122 in plus the table, so the deepest table is the room's length minus 122 in: 22 in in a room 12 ft long (144 − 122). Floated, the 4 in becomes 30 in, so it's the length minus 148 in. A 12 ft-long room can't float this sofa at all, a 13 ft room takes only an 8 in table, in Wayfair's narrow band, and a 14 ft room takes 20 in, the top of Wayfair's standard band. Floating costs 30 − 4 = 26 in more than the wall.
An armchair lowers most of these limits. The planner lines the chair up with the coffee table, so it moves toward the TV with everything else, and room around it runs out sooner: 15 in against the wall in a 12 × 12, and 13 in floated in a 12 × 14.
3 sofa tables, checked by the living room layout planner
Entered as part of the sofa, a sofa table shows up in the planner's drawing as one deeper sofa, so these cards give the numbers from its result panel instead of its plan. Each room is 12 ft wide, with a 32 in door near the bottom corner of the left wall and a 60 in window centered on the right wall. The furniture: the planner's 84 × 37 in sofa with a 12 in-deep table behind it (entered as 84 × 49 in), one 32 × 32 in armchair, its 48 × 24 in coffee table, and a 55 in TV on a 60 × 16 in console, at standard clearances.
Layout A: Against the wall in a 12 × 12
1 layout fits
Without the table, the planner finds three layouts, each with 46 in between the coffee table and the TV. With the sofa entered 12 in deeper, it keeps one: the sofa on the top wall. The 12 in comes straight out of the space in front of the TV: 46 − 12 = 34 in, and the layout still passes every check, including 30 in walkways from the door.
Best for: a sofa against the wall that needs a surface behind it for lamps.
The trade-off: two of the three layouts are gone, and with the armchair the deepest table that still passes here is 15 in.
Layout B: Floated in a 12 × 14
Floats
The planner floats the sofa off the top wall: "The sofa sits 30 in off the wall so people can walk behind it." With the table entered in the sofa's depth, that 30 in is behind the table, the low end of Houzz's 30 to 48 in for a main walkway. In front of the TV, 44 in without the table becomes 44 − 12 = 32 in with it.
Best for: a sofa that faces the TV with a walkway behind it.
The trade-off: floating costs 26 in. With the same table against the top wall, the planner leaves 58 in in front of the TV, not 32 in.
Layout C: Floated in a 12 × 13? Not with a table
Against a wall only
Without the table, the planner floats the sofa here too, with 32 in in front of the TV. Add the 12 in table and all three layouts it lists have the sofa against a wall: under the window with 34 in in front of the TV, or on the top wall with 46 in. With the armchair, the deepest table that passes floated in this room is 1 in; without it, 8 in.
Best for: a sofa table against the wall: on the top wall, the planner still leaves 46 in in front of the TV.
The trade-off: with this furniture, a 12 in table needs the 12 × 14 of Layout B to float.
Want to try your own room? Add your sofa table's depth to your sofa's depth in the planner. If it still finds a layout, the table fits; the "table to TV" number tells you what's left in front of the screen. It lists its three best layouts, so a floated one that passes may not show up; the depth table above has the floated limits.
The numbers we checked
These are the numbers behind every table and card on this page.
Table heights and the height rule from Living Spaces and Hunker; sofa and loveseat backs from Wayfair; length from Hunker; the 30 in walkway from Houzz (30 to 48 in for main routes) and the living room layout planner.
- The top of your sofa's back, from the floor: the very top, where Wayfair measures a sofa's height.
- The sofa's length from arm to arm; take 12 in off for the table.
- The floor from the wall behind the sofa to the TV wall or the wall opposite.
- Whether people will walk behind the sofa. If they will, the table needs 30 in clear behind it.

Questions
What is the standard height of a console table?
28 to 32 in, with 30 in the average (Living Spaces) or "the norm" (Hunker). Behind a sofa, the same piece is called a sofa table, and it should be no taller than the sofa's back.
Can a sofa table be taller than the couch?
The guides say no: no taller than the sofa back (Living Spaces), and slightly shorter rather than slightly taller (Hunker). On a 28 in back, an average 30 in table would stand 2 in above it.
How long should a sofa table be for an 84-inch sofa?
72 in or shorter: 84 − 12 = 72 in, which leaves 6 in between each end of the table and the end of the sofa (Hunker: at least 12 in shorter).
How much space do you need behind a sofa table?
If people walk behind it, at least 30 in between the table and the wall, the low end of Houzz's 30 to 48 in for main walkways. That puts a floated sofa with a 12 in table 30 + 12 = 42 in from the wall. With an 84 × 37 in sofa, a coffee table and a TV, that takes a room at least 148 + 12 = 160 in (13 ft 4 in) long to pass the living room layout planner's checks, or the 12 × 14 of Layout B with an armchair.
Should a sofa table match the coffee table or end tables?
Not in height. A coffee table goes by the sofa's seat cushions and is 16 to 18 in tall (Wayfair; see coffee table height); an end table by the arm, 18 to 28 in tall, most about 24 in, within 2 in of the arm (Wayfair); a sofa table by the back.
How high should art hang above a sofa table?
Measure from the top of the sofa back, since the table sits at or below it. Our guide to how high to hang art above a couch or console has the heights: 8 to 10 in between the sofa back and the frame (The Home Depot, Minted).
