There’s no standard sectional size, but most are 90 to 168 inches wide along the back and 94 to 156 inches on the other side (Wayfair). The smallest L-shape, a sofa with a chaise, is about 90 to 115 inches wide and 59 to 65 deep at the chaise end; a corner sectional is about 8 feet on each side.
How sectionals are measured
Because sectionals come in so many configurations, Wayfair’s guide says there are no standard sectional dimensions. It does define the measurements to compare:
| Measurement | Usual range | Size bands |
|---|---|---|
| Overall width (along the back) | 90 to 168 in | Small under 89 in, standard 90 to 109 in, large over 109 in |
| Overall length or depth (the other side) | 94 to 156 in | – |
| Seat depth | – | Shallow under 21 in, standard 21 to 28 in, deep 28 to 35 in, extra deep 35 in+ |
From Wayfair’s guide to measuring for a sectional. For a curved sectional, use the smallest rectangle it fits in.
A sofa with a chaise is the exception to those ranges: it’s one piece with a long seat on one end, so its “other side” is the chaise, about 5 feet deep, not 8 to 13 feet.

The chaise is the measurement to plan around. Nine of the eleven are 62 to 65 inches deep at the chaise end, against about 37 for the sofa part. That extra 2 feet comes off the walkway or the coffee table space on one side of the room.

A four-seat corner sectional is about 98 to 104 inches, roughly 8 to 8½ feet, along each wall. It fills a corner rather than one wall, so it needs that length on both walls, plus room to walk past the open end.
Will a sectional fit your living room?
Measure both walls and the room’s depth, Wayfair suggests, mark the outline on the floor with painter’s tape, and check the doorways and hallways it has to pass through.
Our planner tested a standard 96-inch sectional with a chaise, 65 inches deep at the chaise end, in rooms from 10×10 to 12×15: it fits a 10×12 living room with a coffee table and a TV at every clearance setting. See a sectional in a small living room for the plans, and couch dimensions or Nest In Small’s apartment-size sofa guide if a sectional turns out to be too big.
Questions
What is the standard size of a sectional?
There isn’t one; sectionals are built from different pieces. Wayfair gives 90 to 168 inches for the overall width and 94 to 156 inches for the other side.
How deep is a sectional with a chaise?
About 59 to 65 inches at the chaise end for the IKEA sofas with a chaise above, and about 36 to 39 inches along the rest of the sofa.
How big is an L-shaped couch?
A sofa with a chaise is about 90 to 115 inches wide and 5 feet deep at the chaise. A four-seat corner sectional is about 98 to 104 inches along each wall.
What size sectional fits a small living room?
In our planner, a 96×65-inch sectional with a chaise fits a 10×12 living room with a coffee table and TV. Wayfair calls anything under 89 inches wide a small sectional.
