Measure the screen diagonally, from one corner of the picture to the opposite corner, in inches. Don’t include the frame around it. That number is the TV’s size: a screen that measures about 65 inches corner to corner is a 65-inch TV. To skip the tape, read the size from the model number (on a Samsung, QN65… is a 65-inch) or from the TV’s settings menu.
How to measure a TV with a tape measure
- Start at one corner of the picture area, where the screen meets the frame. Samsung starts at the upper left.
- Stretch the tape to the opposite corner, the lower right, keeping it straight across the screen. Two people make it easier on a big TV, and a soft cloth tape won’t scratch it.
- Read the length in inches. Leave out the bezel, the frame around the picture: TCL’s and Samsung’s support pages both measure the picture alone.
Don’t worry if you get a little less than the size on the box. Makers sell TVs by “class”, and the real picture is often up to about half an inch smaller: Vizio lists its 65-inch class TVs at 64.5 inches viewable, and Samsung its 65-inch QN90F at a 64.5-inch diagonal.
How to find your TV’s size without measuring
From the model number. It’s on the label on the back of the TV and in the settings menu. On a Samsung, Samsung says the first number in the model code is the screen size: QN65Q800T is a 65-inch. Other makers’ model numbers follow the same pattern in practice, although they don’t publish it as a rule: LG’s OLED65C6PUA is its 65-inch class C6, and Vizio’s V655M is a 65-inch.

From the box, receipt or manual. All three name the size class.
From the size to the width and height
Every HD and 4K TV has a 16:9 screen: 16 units wide for every 9 tall. On that shape the width is 0.87 × the diagonal and the height 0.49 ×. So a 55-inch screen is about 47.9 in wide and 27 in tall, and a 65-inch 56.7 × 31.9 in. The frame adds a little: on today’s thin-frame TVs, often less than an inch.
| TV size | Screen width | Screen height |
|---|---|---|
| 43 in | 37.5 in | 21.1 in |
| 50 in | 43.6 in | 24.5 in |
| 55 in | 47.9 in | 27 in |
| 65 in | 56.7 in | 31.9 in |
| 75 in | 65.4 in | 36.8 in |
| 85 in | 74.1 in | 41.7 in |

Going the other way, from a width you have to fill: divide the width by 0.87. A space 60 in wide takes a screen of about 69 inches diagonal (60 ÷ 0.87), so a 65-inch fits and a 70-inch is close.
What size TV should you get?
Measure from your seat to the wall the TV will go on. For a screen that fills about 40° of your view, the cinema feel, divide that distance in inches by 1.2 (LG’s rule); for a more relaxed 30°, divide by 1.6. From 9 ft, 108 inches, that’s 65 to 90 inches. The TV size calculator does the sums, and for a bedroom, where you sit closer, the same rules give a smaller screen.
Questions
How are TV sizes measured?
Diagonally, from one corner of the picture to the opposite corner, in inches. The frame isn’t counted.
Do you measure a TV screen with or without the frame?
Without. Measure the picture area only, inside the bezel.
How do I check my TV size in settings?
Find the model number: on a Samsung, Settings › All Settings › Support › About This TV; on an LG, press Mute three times; on a TCL, Settings › System › About. The size is the number in the model code, such as the 65 in QN65….
How can I tell what size my TV is without measuring?
Read the model number on the back label or in the settings menu: the number in it is the size. The box, receipt or manual also name it.
What size TV is 60 inches wide?
About a 69-inch on the diagonal (60 ÷ 0.87). With their frames, the 70-inch TVs on our 70-inch TV dimensions page are about 62 in wide.
Why does my 65-inch TV measure 64.5 inches?
TVs are sold by size class, and the real picture is often up to half an inch smaller: Vizio and Samsung both list 64.5 inches for their 65-inch class sets.
What size TV mount do I need?
Go by the VESA pattern and the weight, not the screen size; see how to mount a TV on the wall.
