Leave 8 to 10 in between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame (The Home Depot, Minted). Over a 34 in sofa back, that puts the bottom of the art at 42 to 44 in. Over a headboard, Minted allows less, 3 to 8 in; over a console, it hangs art at eye level, which an 8 in gap matches when the art is the right height. Then pick art two-thirds to three-quarters as wide as the furniture: 56 to 63 in over an 84 in sofa.
How high to hang art above a couch, bed or console
On a wall above furniture, the gap between the furniture and the frame sets the height, so the two read as one group. Guides agree on the idea and differ a little on the number: 8 to 10 in above a sofa or bed (The Home Depot), 8 to 10 in above a sofa back and 3 to 8 in above a headboard (Minted), 6 to 8 in above a sofa or headboard (Living Spaces), and 7 to 10 in above a sofa, bed or desk (Framebridge). Our Art Hanging Height Calculator uses 8 to 10 in, with 6 in as its lowest option.
We ran the calculator over the sofa, console and headboard heights the sources give, for gaps of 6, 8 and 10 in:
| Furniture top | Bottom of the art, 6 to 10 in gap | Art this tall centers at 57 in (8 in gap) | Bottom of the art to an 8 ft ceiling (8 in gap) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sofa back, low, 26 in low end of Wayfair's 26 to 36 in | 32 to 36 in | 46 in | 62 in |
| Sofa back, 34 in the calculator's default | 40 to 44 in | 30 in | 54 in |
| Sofa back, high, 36 in high end of Wayfair's 26 to 36 in | 42 to 46 in | 26 in | 52 in |
| Console table, low, 28 in Living Spaces: 28 to 32 in | 34 to 38 in | 42 in | 60 in |
| Console table, 30 in Living Spaces' average | 36 to 40 in | 38 in | 58 in |
| Console table, tall, 32 in Living Spaces: 28 to 32 in | 38 to 42 in | 34 in | 56 in |
| Headboard, low, 45 in low end of Wayfair's 45 to 65 in | 51 to 55 in | 8 in | 43 in |
| Headboard, tall, 65 in high end of Wayfair's 45 to 65 in | 71 to 75 in | None: the bottom is already above 57 in | 23 in |
Art Hanging Height calculator, "Above furniture". Heights from the floor. Sofa backs: Wayfair, on our Furniture Sizes chart. Console tables: Living Spaces. Headboards: Wayfair ("standard headboards are typically 45 in–65 in tall"), taken as the height of the top from the floor. Third column: the art height whose center lands at 57 in, the open-wall height.
The third column is where the furniture rule and the 57 in rule agree. Over a 34 in sofa back with an 8 in gap, a 30 in-tall piece centers at exactly 57 in; a 24 in piece centers lower, at 54 in, and a 36 in piece higher, at 60 in. The calculator keeps the gap and lets the center move. Over a headboard the center lands high for anything taller than 8 in: a 45 in headboard and an 8 in gap put a 24 in piece's center at 65 in, 8 in above the open-wall height.
Tall headboards run out of wall. Over a 65 in headboard with an 8 in gap, a 24 in-tall piece would top out at 97 in, an inch past an 8-foot ceiling; with a 6 in gap it reaches 95 in, an inch below. Measure the wall from the headboard to the ceiling before you buy.
Over a console table: the gap or eye level?
Console tables average 30 in high and run 28 to 32 in (Living Spaces), so an 8 to 10 in gap puts the bottom of the art at 36 to 42 in. Minted treats a console differently from a sofa: lean the art on it, or hang it at eye level. Both can be true at once only for art of the right height, the third column above: 38 in tall over a 30 in console with an 8 in gap.
With shorter art you have to choose. A 24 in-tall piece 8 in above a 30 in console centers at 50 in. Centered at 57 in instead, it hangs with its bottom at 45 in, 15 in above the console. If the console holds lamps or tall objects, the higher option leaves them room; if it's bare, the 8 in gap keeps the pair together.
How big should art be above a couch or bed
Choose art about two-thirds to three-quarters as wide as the furniture below it (Minted; The Home Depot and Living Spaces give two-thirds). Here is that range, as the calculator works it out, for the sofa and bed widths on Nest In Small’s Furniture Sizes chart:
| Furniture | Width | Art width, ⅔–¾ |
|---|---|---|
| Loveseat, small Most loveseats are 52 to 66 in | 52 in | 34½ to 39 in |
| Loveseat, large Most loveseats are 52 to 66 in | 66 in | 44 to 49½ in |
| Apartment sofa Under 70 in | 70 in | 46½ to 52½ in |
| Sofa The most common length | 84 in | 56 to 63 in |
| Sofa, long Top of the 71 to 86 in range | 86 in | 57½ to 64½ in |
| Sectional with a chaise Our sectional guide's standard size | 96 in | 64 to 72 in |
| Twin bed | 38 in mattress, 42 in frame | 25½ to 28½ in / 28 to 31½ in |
| Full bed | 54 in mattress, 58 in frame | 36 to 40½ in / 38½ to 43½ in |
| Queen bed | 60 in mattress, 64 in frame | 40 to 45 in / 42½ to 48 in |
| King bed | 76 in mattress, 80 in frame | 50½ to 57 in / 53½ to 60 in |
| California king | 72 in mattress | 48 to 54 in |
Art Hanging Height calculator's ⅔–¾ range, rounded to the half inch as it shows it. Sofa and loveseat widths: Wayfair, on our Furniture Sizes chart; sectional: our sectional guide. Beds: mattress width (Sleep Foundation, Casper) / our bed-frame planning size.
The calculator allows about an inch either side: over an 84 in sofa it calls anything from 55 to 64 in a good width, 54 in narrow and 65 in wide. Art wider than the sofa is "Too wide". For a bed, measure the headboard: Minted's 40 to 45 in over a queen is two-thirds to three-quarters of the 60 in mattress, and its 54 to 60 in over a king is close to the range for an 80 in king frame, 53½ to 60 in. For a sectional, measure the side the art hangs over; Nest In Small’s sectional guide works with a 96 in sectional.
3 walls, drawn by the Art Hanging Height calculator
Each drawing is the calculator's own elevation, to scale. The dashed line is 57 in; the dot is the nail; the small dimension is the gap above the furniture.
Layout A: Couch: 60 in-wide art over an 84 in sofa
Good width
With the sofa back at 30 in, inside Wayfair's 26 to 36 in, an 8 in gap puts the bottom of the art at 38 in and the top of a 40 in-tall piece at 78 in. The wire sits 4 in down, so the nail goes at 74 in. At 60 in wide the art is 71% of the sofa, inside the 56 to 63 in range.
Best for: an 84 in sofa, the most common length on our Furniture Sizes chart, with one large piece.
The trade-off: a 40 in-tall piece reaches 78 in, which leaves 18 in below an 8-foot ceiling, and its center sits at 58 in, a touch above the open-wall 57 in.
Layout B: Bed: 48 in-wide art over a king
Narrow
The headboard top is at 45 in, the low end of Wayfair's range. A 6 in gap, inside both Minted's 3 to 8 in and Living Spaces' 6 to 8 in, puts the bottom at 51 in and the top of a 30 in-tall piece at 81 in. With two D-rings 2 in down, both nails go at 79 in. The calculator flags the width: "Narrower than two-thirds of the furniture. Try 53½ in–60 in wide, or hang two pieces side by side."
Best for: a king bed, once the art is 53½ to 60 in wide or hung as a pair.
The trade-off: the center lands at 66 in, 9 in above 57 in. Over a bed, the gap sets the height, not eye level, and an 8-foot ceiling leaves 15 in above the frame.
Layout C: Console: art centered at 57 in over a 48 in table
Centered at 57 in
A 30 in console, Living Spaces' average, with an 8 in gap: the bottom of the art is at 38 in, and a 38 in-tall piece puts the center at 38 + 19 = 57 in and the top at 76 in. With a 3 in wire drop, the nail goes at 73 in. At 34 in wide it is 71% of the console, inside 32 to 36 in.
Best for: an entry or hall console, where Minted hangs art at eye level: here the gap and eye level agree.
The trade-off: only art about 38 in tall gets both. A 24 in piece 8 in up centers at 50 in; centered at 57 in it floats 15 in above the console.
The numbers we checked
These are the numbers behind every table and drawing on this page.
8 to 10 in is from The Home Depot and Minted, 3 to 8 in and ⅔–¾ from Minted, 26 to 36 in sofa backs from Wayfair, and 28 to 32 in console tables from Living Spaces. The 6 to 10 in range and the inch of leeway on width are the Art Hanging Height calculator's.
- The top of the furniture from the floor: the sofa back (not the cushions), the headboard, or the console top.
- The furniture's width; for a bed, the headboard.
- The frame, outside edge to outside edge, and its hanger drop with the wire pulled tight.
- Over a tall headboard, the wall from the headboard to the ceiling.

Questions
How high above a couch should a picture be hung?
Leave 8 to 10 in between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame (The Home Depot, Minted); Living Spaces says 6 to 8 in. Over a 34 in sofa back, the bottom of the art goes at 42 to 44 in.
How high should art hang above a console table?
Either 6 to 10 in above it, like a sofa, or at eye level, which Minted suggests for consoles. Over a 30 in console, the bottom of the art goes at 36 to 40 in; centered at 57 in, a 24 in-tall piece hangs 15 in above it.
How high above a bed or headboard should you hang art?
3 to 8 in above the headboard by Minted's guide, 6 to 8 in by Living Spaces', 8 to 10 in above a bed by The Home Depot's. The calculator's smallest gap is 6 in. Over a 45 in headboard, a 6 in gap puts the bottom of the frame at 51 in.
How big should art be above a couch?
About two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa's width: 56 to 63 in over an 84 in sofa, 46½ to 52½ in over a 70 in apartment sofa. Narrower art can hang as a pair.
What size art goes over a queen or king bed?
Minted suggests 40 to 45 in wide over a queen and 54 to 60 in over a king. Two-thirds to three-quarters of a 64 in queen frame is 42½ to 48 in, of an 80 in king frame 53½ to 60 in.
Should art over a sofa still be centered at 57 inches?
Only when its height makes the two rules meet: over a 34 in sofa back with an 8 in gap, a 30 in-tall piece centers at 57 in. Otherwise keep the gap; the calculator does.
