How Many People Fit at a 60-Inch Round Table? 6 to 8, Measured

A 60-inch round table seats 6 to 8 (West Elm, Bassett); its 188 in edge gives 7 people 24 in each. Seats for 36 to 72 in rounds and the room each one needs.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Six to eight. West Elm and Bassett both put a 60 in round table at six to eight, and our Dining Table Size calculator rates it the same. Its edge is π × 60 ≈ 188 in: room for seven at 24 in each, or eight at 23.6 in. Lifetime puts eight chairs around its 60 in folding round. With 36 in behind the chairs, a 60 in round needs an 11 × 11 room.

How many people can sit at a 60-inch round table?

Count the edge. A round table's edge is π × its diameter, so a 60 in round has π × 60 ≈ 188 in to share out. At 24 in per person, the allowance West Elm, IKEA and Wayfair give, that's 188 ÷ 24 ≈ 7.8: seven people with room to spare, since 7 × 24 = 168 in. Eight would need 8 × 24 = 192 in, more than the table has, so each gets 23.6 in, a little under 24 in. Six get 31.4 in each.

The guides agree on the range. West Elm says a 60 in table seats six to eight, and Bassett says a round 54 in or larger fits six to eight; our Dining Table Size calculator uses the same six to eight. Lifetime, which makes folding tables for events, puts eight chairs around its 60 in round. A 5-foot round is the same table: 5 × 12 = 60 in.

With wide chairs, plan on fewer. 2Modern adds 6 in per person for wide chairs, 30 in in all, and at 30 in a 60 in round seats six (188 ÷ 30 ≈ 6.3).

Round table seating by size, from 36 to 72 inches

The same arithmetic works for every round table: divide the edge by the room each person gets and round down. Here it is next to the calculator's ratings and Lifetime's counts for its folding rounds.

People = edge ÷ room per person, rounded down. The calculator's ratings follow Bassett, West Elm and Wayfair; it rates every round from 54 in up for six to eight. Lifetime's counts are for its folding event tables.

Small rounds hold the calculator's count. A 36 in round seats four at 24 in (113 ÷ 24 ≈ 4.7), the four Bassett and Wayfair give for 36 to 44 in tables. A 48 in round has 151 in of edge: six at 25.1 in each, the top of the four to six the calculator and Bassett give. West Elm puts 42 to 48 in rounds at four, and Lifetime seats five at its 48 in round, 30.2 in each.

At 72 in, the counts split. From 54 in up, the calculator, like Bassett, stops at six to eight. A 72 in round (a 6-foot round) has 226 in of edge: nine at 24 in (226 ÷ 24 ≈ 9.4), or seven at 30 in. Lifetime puts ten chairs around its 72 in folding round, 22.6 in each. 2Modern goes the other way and calls 60 to 72 in the size for six. Its own sum is smaller: six at 24 in is 6 × 24 = 144 in of edge, a table about 46 in across (144 ÷ π).

How much room a round table needs

A round table needs its diameter plus the clearance behind the chairs, both ways. The NKBA asks for 32 in from the table edge where diners sit and nobody passes, 36 in so someone can edge past, and 44 in to walk past. For a 60 in round at 36 in, that's 36 + 60 + 36 = 132 in, or 11 ft, each way. The calculator passes each round below at exactly that size and fails it 1 in smaller either way.

Smallest dining area (it's square for a round table), from the Dining Table Size calculator: the diameter plus the clearance on both sides. Seats are the calculator's. Its list of standard rounds stops at 60 in; for the 72 in we checked its verdict, which names the largest round that fits.

A 60 in round takes a little more floor than a table for eight. At 36 in, the 60 in round needs 11 × 11 feet, 121 sq ft. A 36 × 84 in table, West Elm's size for eight, needs 9 × 13, or 117 sq ft, and a 36 × 72 in table for six 9 × 12, or 108 sq ft. Our guide to how many people fit at a 6-foot table has the rectangles.

In a square room, the round wins. There, the longest rectangle that fits is no longer than the largest round is across, and the calculator rates the round for more people. These are its answers for three square dining areas:

Largest round table and largest standard 36 in-wide rectangle the Dining Table Size calculator fits with 36 in (edge past) or 44 in (walk past) on every side, and the seats it gives. None: no rectangle from 48 in long fits.

In an 11 × 11, the round seats six to eight against six at a 36 × 60 in table. With 44 in to walk past, a rectangle needs 48 + 44 + 44 = 136 in of length, more than the room's 132 in, but a 44 in round still fits. In a 12 × 12 at 36 in, the calculator allows up to a 72 in round; its plan draws the 60 in, the largest size in its list. See how much space around a dining table for the clearances.

Layout A: A 60 in round in an 11 × 11 room

Fits Edge past: exactly 36 in all round

A 60 in round sits in the middle with 36 in on every side: 36 + 60 + 36 = 132 in each way. The calculator rates it for six to eight and draws six chairs. Its 188 in edge gives eight people 23.6 in each.

Best for: six who like room, or eight at 24 in apiece.

The trade-off: 36 in lets people edge past, not walk past. Walking past takes 60 + 44 + 44 = 148 in (12 ft 4 in) each way; in this room the largest round at 44 in is 44 in, for four to six.

Fits Edge past: exactly 36 in all round

A 48 in round with 36 in all round: 36 + 48 + 36 = 120 in. The calculator rates it for four to six and draws four chairs. Its 151 in edge gives six people 25.1 in each.

Best for: four every day, six at a squeeze.

The trade-off: a 54 in round in the same room leaves (120 − 54) ÷ 2 = 33 in: room to sit, but nobody can edge past.

Layout C: The smallest room for a 60 in round: 10 ft 4 in square

Seated only 32 in all round

With 32 in behind the chairs, the NKBA minimum where nobody passes, a 60 in round fits in 32 + 60 + 32 = 124 in each way. Same table, same six to eight, as Layout A.

Best for: a dining nook where nobody walks behind the chairs.

The trade-off: nobody can get past a seated diner. To edge past, the room needs 8 in more each way: 11 × 11.

The 24 in per person comes from West Elm, IKEA and Wayfair, and the 30 in for wide chairs from 2Modern. The round-table ratings come from Bassett, West Elm and Wayfair, the folding-table counts from Lifetime and the clearances from the NKBA.

Measure this first
  • Your table's diameter, edge to edge, with any leaf in. Multiply by 3.14 for the edge.
  • Your chairs' width. Wide chairs and armchairs need about 30 in of edge each, not 24 in.
  • The dining area's shorter side, wall to wall: a round table is limited by it.
  • Which sides people walk behind, and anything behind the chairs. Measure the clearance from its front.

Questions

How many chairs fit around a 60-inch round table?

Six to eight. Seven get 24 in of edge each, the usual allowance; eight get 23.6 in, and six get 31.4 in. West Elm, Bassett and our calculator say six to eight, and Lifetime puts eight chairs around its 60 in folding round.

Can 10 people sit at a 60-inch round table?

Only at 188 ÷ 10 = 18.8 in each, narrower than the 19 to 20 in seat of a dining chair on Nest In Small’s Furniture Sizes list. Lifetime's count for its 60 in round is eight. Ten at 24 in need 240 in of edge, and a 72 in round has 226 in.

How many people can sit at a 72-inch round table?

Nine at 24 in each: its edge is π × 72 ≈ 226 in. Lifetime puts ten chairs around its 72 in folding round, at 22.6 in each, and at 30 in for wide chairs it's seven. Our calculator and Bassett put every round 54 in and up at six to eight, and 2Modern calls 60 to 72 in a table for six.

How many people can sit at a 48-inch round table?

Four to six. Its edge is π × 48 ≈ 151 in: six at 25.1 in each, five at 30.2 in. Bassett and our calculator say four to six, West Elm four, and Lifetime five at its 48 in folding round.

How many does a 5-foot round table seat?

A 5-foot round is 60 in across, so six to eight: seven at 24 in each, eight at 23.6 in. It needs an 11 × 11 dining area for 36 in behind the chairs.

What size round table seats 6?

A 48 in round seats six at 25.1 in each, at the top of its four to six. For six to eight, Bassett asks for 54 in or more and West Elm gives 60 in. 2Modern's own sum for six at 24 in comes to about 46 in (144 ÷ π), though it gives 60 to 72 in for six.

How much room do you need for a 60-inch round table?

An 11 × 11 area for 36 in on every side, so people can edge past seated diners. To walk past, 12 ft 4 in × 12 ft 4 in. Where nobody passes, 10 ft 4 in × 10 ft 4 in (32 in a side, NKBA).
